From Wimbledon to the US Open: What Makes a Great Tennis Fan Zone?

Tennis tournaments today are about far more than the action on court. The biggest events in the sport now create full day experiences for fans, partners and sponsors. At the centre of this evolution sits the tennis fan zone.

From the grounds of The Championships, Wimbledon to the vibrant atmosphere of the US Open Tennis Championships, fan zones have become an essential part of the tournament experience. They extend dwell time, create sponsor engagement and give fans new ways to connect with the sport.

So… what separates a good fan zone from a great one? Below are some of the key ingredients that consistently deliver successful tennis fan experiences.

Bringing Fans Closer to the Game

One of the most effective fan zone strategies is creating moments that connect spectators more deeply with tennis itself. This is becoming even more important as the sport attracts increasingly broad audiences.

Tennis holds a unique place in the sports landscape, particularly in the UK, where broadcasts can reach around 58 percent female viewership, a level far higher than most major sports. Fan zones that offer inclusive, welcoming experiences are therefore especially valuable for engaging this diverse audience.

Provision Events has delivered a number of tennis activations designed around this principle, including recent work at the NEXO Dallas Open, where we helped create an engaging environment that allowed fans to interact with the tournament in new ways.

Interactive Experiences That Invite Participation

Modern audiences increasingly expect activities rather than passive entertainment. The strongest fan zones transform downtime between matches into meaningful engagement.

This growing appetite for participation is reinforced by the rise of younger tennis viewers. Studies show that viewership among 18 to 34 year olds is one of the fastest growing segments globally, driven by digital platforms and year-round storytelling around players and tournaments. Interactive activations appeal strongly to this age group and help tournaments capture their attention.

Popular examples include:

·      Serve speed challenges

·      Tennis simulators

·      Skill-based games

·      Branded installations with digital leaderboards

These formats not only entertain, but also support longer dwell time and repeat engagement throughout the tournament.

Strong Brand Integration

For partners and sponsors, fan zones are one of the most valuable touchpoints within a tournament environment. The most effective activations integrate the brand into the experience itself. Instead of acting as traditional advertising, they become something fans actively choose to engage with.

This approach played a central role in our work with Purina Pro Plan at both the ATP Swiss Indoors Basel and the Nitto ATP Finals, where the brand was woven into a fan-first experience that complemented the wider tournament atmosphere.

Spaces Designed for Social Interaction

Fan zones must function as places where people want to spend time. Comfortable, visually inviting and socially oriented spaces encourage fans to stay longer and return throughout the day.

Features that consistently perform well include:

·      Relaxed seating areas

·      Viewing screens for live matches

·      Charging points and shaded areas

·      Photo opportunities and social backdrops

The more time fans spend within the environment, the more value the activation delivers to both tournaments and sponsors.

Reflecting the Host City and Event Identity

The strongest fan zones feel connected to the identity of both the event and the host location. Incorporating elements of the host city helps create a unique atmosphere that cannot be replicated elsewhere on the tennis calendar.

This might include incorporating local cuisine, regional design, artwork or cultural partnerships. Done well, it gives the fan zone its own character while still aligning closely with the global identity of the tournament.

Why Fan Zones Matter More Than Ever

Tennis is competing in a crowded global entertainment market, and tournaments that elevate the fan experience are the ones seeing the greatest return. This is particularly relevant given that tennis fans tend to be more affluent than typical sports audiences, with higher-income households and professionals in both the US and UK more likely to follow major tournaments such as Wimbledon.

Fan zones play a central role in engaging this audience, providing:

·      Authentic sponsor integration

·      Inclusive environments

·      Greater dwell time

·      Memorable moments beyond the court

As tennis continues to grow globally, the fan zone is no longer an add on. It's a core component of the modern tournament experience, from Wimbledon to the US Open and everywhere in between.
